LANGAT SEWERAGE PROJECT HOLDS RECORD FOR THE LONGEST MICROTUNNELING DN1800 CURVATURE BREAKTHROUGH IN MALAYSIA SEWER NETWORK INDUSTRY

02 May 2019

Langat Sewerage Project has lead Malaysia sewer network industry in marking a new benchmark by the successful breakthrough of the longest microtunneling DN1800 curvature sewerage pipeline for 725-m pipe length. The launching of the Longest Microtunneling DN1800 curvature breakthrough in Malaysia Sewer Network was held on 28 December 2018, and the breakthrough happened on 25 April 2019. The celebration event which held on 2nd May 2019 was launched by YB. Dr. Xavier Jayakumar, the Minister of Kementerian Air, Tanah dan Sumber Asli Malaysia, with the presence of YM Tengku Zulpuri Shah Raja Puji the Deputy Minister of KATS, Puan Azizah Ariffin the Deputy Secretary General, Water and Sewerage of KATS, Tuan Syed Jaafar Idid Syed Abdyllah Idid the Director General of JPP, Haji Mohd Razin Ghazali, the Director of MMC Engineering Sdn Bhd and Encik Abdul Fatah Endut, MMC PLSB Project Director. Also present were the Senior Management of Government agencies like IWK, SPAN, and other local authorities.

With the ambition to demonstrate another engineering achievement in the Malaysia Book of Records, MMC PLSB as design and build contractor has collaborated with technical partner, MMC Engineering and tunnelling specialist, ICOP Construction (M) to lay 725m sewer pipeline by using the trenchless pipe-jacking technology vide “Microtunneling” method. The ground level for maximum 19m depth in a working shaft to connect 1800mm sewerage pipe and thrusted into the ground for 725m long curved drive from Jalan Dutamas 1 crossing the SILK Highway to Jalan Cheras Jaya 3. The project team has successfully completed the drive in 4 months albeit 200m hard rock stratum underneath.

The longest microtunnelling curvature is one of many important portions to support a total of 105-km gravity sewer networks for Langat Sewerage Project that soon will benefit 920,000 population equivalent (PE) which covers approximately 77.6km² catchment area in Cheras and Kajang (inclusive of D49 project). Upon its full completion in March 2022 under the same project component, the Langat Centralized Sewage Treatment Plant located on 7.3-hectares land in Kampung Sungai Balak will be able to treat raw sewage to Category 1 Standard A effluent as stipulated in Environmental Quality (Sewerage) Regulation 2009.

The Langat CSTP will also be provided with recreational/community facilities for the public such as sixteen (16) badminton courts, two (2) takraw courts, two (2) basketball courts, two (2) futsal courts, a children’s playground, facilities for skateboard, Gazebo and a community hall. This facility is to promote “local buy in” as part of “return to community” approach to alter the mind set of people from the negative to positive mind set on the existence of Centralised Sewage Treatment Plant in their neighbourhood.
